Papua New Guinea Bilum String Bags
Natural fibres looped to make a heavy duty netted bag
What are bilum bags?
PNG bilum bags are traditional, handmade string bags used by the people of Papua New Guinea. Bilums are known and prized for three reasons: functional style, minimal weight & incredible strength. Both women and men use these bags. Sunday Isle bilums are made the traditional way - using natural fibres and plant materials “looped” to create the netted bag. Our bilums will stay true to their origins as we believe in maintaining the traditional craft and we feel they are the most beautiful and functional netted bag available.
Our bilums use local plants that are cultivated specifically for use in making bilums. The plant fibres are rolled by our makers, along their thighs to make “bush rope”. The bush rope is then looped to make the bilum bag.
Eco-friendly, sustainable, slow made.
